French term

bois rouge

French to English Other Forestry / Wood / Timber wood for making posts and stakes

Thanks in advance for any help. I did find that the wood of certain trees is called "bois rouge", but this seems to be a defect or something not desired in logs used to make wooden stakes, fence posts, etc. Sapwood, perhaps? Although "aubier" is also used in this text. Or is it just "red wood"?

dozy, doty, foxy wood, in an early stage of decay

... sometimes seems to be referred to as "warmed wood" too it appears, due to the slight increase in warmth as it has been infested and is starting to rot

to get there:

another interesting tidbit (as it seems this is a term a bit archaic)

....produce red or foxy timber, which is totally useless, for, although it looks sound when cut, on exposure to the atmosphere it soon completes this incipient decay, and moulders the timber into dust, a circumstance by which ship-builders are much annoyed.
