By far the most-used sanding block in my
shop is a piece of MDF with a sheet of
sandpaper glued to both sides. I make lots of
blocks in a range of grits, spraying both sides
of the MDF and the back of the paper with
contact cement, and then sticking the paper
to the block. You can use these blocks for
leveling flat surfaces or for cutting or rounding
over edges. And they’re useful when
sanding small parts, by clamping them to
the bench and moving the work over the
blocks, instead of the other way around.
Think recycle, too.When the sandpaper
loses its effectiveness, just heat the paper
with a blow dryer or a heat gun and peel it
off. Then apply a fresh sheet.
To keep your sandpaper organized, consider
building a cabinet dedicated to storing
full sleeves of sandpaper, cut paper, and all
your other associated sanding gear. Size the
shelves to fit sleeves, and then organize
them by grit.
