Veneering the edge of a shelf is another option.
Because the veneered edge is somewhat delicate
and can’t be shaped decoratively, this type
of banding is usually reserved for more homely
types of work, such as the interior shelves of a
kitchen cabinet. The easiest method for veneering
an edge is to use commercial edgebanding,
which has a layer of hot-melt glue on one side. It
comes in rolls in almost every species, and it’s
sized about 1/16 in. wider than standard 3/4-in. plywood.
You can also buy plastic bandings in a variety
of colors to match melamine and laminate
surfaces.
