A stub tenon on the rail supports the frame,
but the bolt pulls the joint tight. Drill a hole
through the post for the bed bolt; then drill a flatbottomed
hole on the inside surface of the bed
rail with a Forstner bit. Now drill the same diameter
hole through the stub tenon in the rail, ending
in the flat-bottomed hole. Use a special wrench
to turn the bolt and install a nut on the bolt so it
bears against the wall of the flat-bottomed hole,
tightening the joint.

'Stub tenon - a short tenon; depth depends on the size of the timber; also a tenon that is shorter than the width of the mortised piece so the tenon does not show (as opposed to a "through tenon").'
