Discussion

Mike Yarnold (X) Sep 9, 2013:
I agree Phil but also previsiones is "en provision de = allowing for unforseen" whereas provisiones is an allowance for "la declinacíon o pérdida de valor de ---"
philgoddard Sep 9, 2013:
I'm pretty sure previsiones is a typo for provisiones.

contingency reserves vs. (current) provisions

Thanks for the extra info., Mike Y.

Tom West III: previsión is a synonym for provisión. 'This term was used to mean 'reserva' in the 1978 Plan General de Contabilidad. It is not used in the 1990 Plan General.'

The previsión entry then, debatably, contradicts itself by going on to give Argentinian examples of allowances for bad debts, asset impairment and loan losses cf. Richard Cadena's (questionable) proposition in the web ref. that allowances refer to assets and provisions to liabilities.

The pasivo corriente vs. no corriente: short-term vs. long-term headings suggest more thought should be given to this question.
Example sentence:

contingency allowance: an amount of money that is added to a calculation of costs to cover things that are not known about now but that may have to be paid for in the future: Another £13.4m has been provided for prof. fees & as a contingency allowance

Peer comment(s):

agree patinba : Quite correct, provisiones are known amounts provided for (hence short-term) Previsiones are longer-term contingency reserves.

Thank you for your astute comments. Otherwise, claiming a mis-spelling might be a simplistic copout.
