Some displays may be color coded to show such things as top speeds for flap operation and aircraft top speed. Sometimes the instrument uses the principle of "blanking" where-by the needle actually goes around the instrument twice, but on the second pass it is partially blanked. Digital style readouts are fitted to newer aircraft -- EFIS etc.
