a journey to change
So könnte man das 'change' sowohl auf den Zweck der Reise (to change something as a result of the project) oder aber auch auf die eigene Persönlichkeit beziehen (a journey to personal change)? So wie es ja auch im Deutschen Satz angedeutet ist.

Ich glaube, dass diese Art Veränderung gemeint ist. Außerdem bleibt bewußt offen, wer verändert wird, denn es sollen wohl sowohl die Geholfenen wie auch die Freiwilligen gemeint sein.

: Travelling emphasises the moving around too much. After all, it's what happens once the volunteer is there that counts.

A quest for change
I agree with Diana that 'travel' doesn't work in this context. However, the same objection can be made against 'journey'. It's all about what happens when the volunteers arrive at their destination. They are on a sort of expedition, a mission with the additional element of adventure.
