French term

abandonner à

French to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
From an art text:

Do you understand this to mean that he gives these "creatures" (with animal-head masks) to viewers of his installations? Or is it rather the life of the creatures that spills over onto the viewer? I'm confused also about the placement of "dans une installation", it sounds like the viewer is in the installation (??). Thanks for your help!

Discussion

David Vaughn Mar 12, 2014:
@feedback Its beginning to sound to me that the text just wants to say that using the same mask-like objects in a perf or in an installation changes how we see them.
The artist seems to be happy to fool around with his toys, but the gallery/sponsor(?) wants to say something "intelligent". (Don't get me wrong, I think the best artists are often like kids.)
Yeah, something like "render available" could work.
mill2 (asker) Mar 12, 2014:
@David I agree that all of this isn't really "incarnate in the text"!
mill2 (asker) Mar 12, 2014:
To which she responded: "genau (performance --> ephemeral etc) so meine ich das".

Right now I'm leaning toward "make available", which isn't quite as sexy as "abandonner", but may have to do...
David Vaughn Mar 12, 2014:
@mill Although the translation into English is useful, don't hesitate to also write in German if it adds clarity.
While an object in an installation may be more "abandoned" to the viewer than the same object in a performance, the same would be true of a painting, which also is more "available" to the viewer than an ephemeral performance. But that may indeed be the idea - not really incarnate in the text - that the viewer has more access to the objects in an installation than in a perf.

Perhaps the words I've used here - "access" or "available" could convey this idea?
mill2 (asker) Mar 11, 2014:
indeed The client confirmed that hunch...
mill2 (asker) Mar 11, 2014:
I asked the client who said that it's metaphorical - the artist, in his installations (in distinction to his performances) "surrenders" (unfortunately I communicate with the client in German so I'm having to translate her answer, adding another layer of difficulty) the figures to the viewers. Maybe it's a matter of him making them more available to the viewers than they are in the performances, which is a more ephemeral form than an installation?
Lara Barnett Mar 11, 2014:
@ Asker I think you should check this with the client. This sounds really specific and if you do not provide an accurate translation the correct idea would get lost. Then post answer in discussion box.

agree Lara Barnett : I like this basic idea - also safer than trying to reproduce English into this French artistic style of speaking that seldom works.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I actually went with your suggestion in the discussion box "make available," so I'm changing the glossary entry accordingly. Thanks!"

surrender it to

surrenders to the spectator in a setting/mounting/environment

or even delivers to the spectator .......
Peer comment(s):

neutral David Vaughn : It's an installation. Better nt reclassify it as a setting/mounting/environment, all of which have different meanings.
