Emergency stop

Although the source text doesn't specifically say 'emergency', I feel it's implied in the context.

gave an immediate signal to stop

for the archetypal BE wording. Knowing about railway "signals to stop", for the average punter the word "immediate" suggests emergency, and the driver would certainly emergency action. No unexpected signal to stop would ever be given on any other circumstances.

The driver might even \"TAKE\" emergency action....\" Don\'t know what happened there!
