Contour of the terrain? My understanding of your text is that it is describing a car journey into a city located in a valley and that the "funnel" is describing the contour of the terrain. The car has come up the last incline and sees the river and the centre of the city spread out below. The descent is like being drawn into a funnel. Will that play for you?

opmerkelijke woordkeuze Stijl van Schrijver is redelijk compact, geen lange volzinnen met lyrische beschrijvingen. Wel is opmerkelijk zijn woordkeuze! Ik zou dan ook aanraden het zaakje ook zo te vertalen; lengte van de zinnen aanhouden en de soms wat vreemde woordkeuze...

"Cars wrench/wriggle/squirm their way into the centre of the city. They are guided into the funnel."

Dat "wringen" zal Schrijver gebruikt hebben analoog aan "zich in allerlei bochten wringen", maar dat komt er hier niet zo goed uit en in het Engels komt het vreemd over (maar het is niet anders).

Waar slaat "ze" op? Auto's of de hoofdpersonen? En is trechter het centrum van de stad (herhaling)?

Stijl is compact maar af en toe wat warrig -> letterlijk vertalen
