Italian term
a suo carico
Italian to English
Medical
Medical (general)
human papillomavirus (HPV)
This is from a report on the incidence and effects of HPV:
"La poplazione maschile ha un ruolo importante nelle patologie da HPV, non solo come agente di trasmissione del virus, ma anche per le malattie *a suo carico.*
I don't understand how "carico" is used here ... this word has different meanings in different contexts.
My sentence so far: "The male population plays an important role in HPV diseases, not only as an agent of transmission of the virus, but also because of the diseases ___?___"
How would you fill in that last part?
Thank you for your help!

personally, I like the second version for it conserves the gist of the expression in Italian

Ah, another one: "attributable to HIV" also sounds good

yeah, ok, of course one tries to avoid repetition, so you write "attributable to it"... but "it" is still the HIV, ain't it?

Ha-ha! Sono un coglione, scusa! Tra AIDS and papilloma ci sarà una gran bella differenza!!! :)
But you see, it's true: brain perception is not pure reception: it's reception and interpretation... One sees an H, one sees a V in the infamous acronym, and one automatically "fills in" an I... looking without seeing...

Comment: "Ciao Michele, grazie. I think everybody has pointed me in the right direction, and your answer comes closest (not "attributable to HIV" however). "

to it correlated
The male population plays an important role in the HPV-pathologies, not only as a transmission agent of the virus but also of the disease to it correlated.
“a suo carico” in my opinion related to the virus and not to male population.

Note from asker:
Thanks for your suggestion also, Simon. "Related to it" would be the correct way to say your suggestion, although I think "attributable" in this case is more precise. |

Gilberto Lacchia
: Yes, I think this is what the author tried to say, although with a not very clear sentence. I would have written: "ma anche per le malattie causate dal virus stesso."

: I'd have to agree with philgoddard on the EN syntax, but the idea is correct, it refers to the virus

"but also of related illnesses" or pathologies
Example sentence:
"The goal in vaccinating men obviously is to decrease the transmission rate from men to women and to protect men from HPV related disease."
Note from asker:
Thank you also, Kay. I think it needed "attributable" more than "related". |

[HPV] disease burden in men
Hi Joseph,
I think it relates to the male population, meaning that men are important not only because they transmit HPV-related diseases to women (cervical ca) but because they also develop them themselves (mouth, throat, penile, anal ca)
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2871537/
