Discussion

Rachel Fell Nov 12, 2014:
Emperor size seems to be 290cm x 235cm, king size 225cm x 220 cm - cf. The White Company, inter alia
Tony M Nov 11, 2014:
@ Linda Oh yes, sorry — don't doubt the size you mentioned exists, I meant I've never seen 'emperor' size!

Tony M Nov 11, 2014:
@ Linda I'm not too sure about that, you know :-)

240 × 260 is larger than the largest I have so far found here in France, and is WAY bigger than my existing king-size bedding from the UK.

I've certainly not heard of this size before, and suspect it may be from the US?
Linda Miranda Nov 11, 2014:
Renate Radziwill-Rall Nov 11, 2014:
have a look at Wikipédia "Bed sizes"

neutral Tony M : Yes but these size names are not common in France. / The first ref. you quote is simply a translated EN site, and there too, the translator was too literal for my taste.

agree writeaway : Emperor is unusual in English too. Makes sense to keep it in French. It's marketing after all.

Merci !

As far as I know, French duvet covers are not described in the same way; I have only ever seen them described as 'lit 1 personne' or 'lit 2 personnes', the latter then further qualified by the actual size in cm — of which there is a bewildering range, none of which unofrtunately seem to correctly fit my UK bedding!

One of the largest sizes I have personally come across is 240 × 220 cm — but I hardly think that quite qualifies as 'emperor'.

You might try large stores' websites and/or mail-order companies' websites to get a feel for the range of sizes available.

Thanks to the size charts provided respectively by Linda and cyr, we can clearly see that not only are the sizes not named in France, but also, there is no direct one-for-one equivalence (just as there isn't for bed sizes.

Hence it seems pointless to me — and uninformative for the reader — to do other than quote the actual dimensions; of course, it does depdnd what the purpose is: if an EN company is eeking to sell its bedding in France, there is no harm in using the size names (which might be akin to product names, and hence arguably non-translatable) along with the actual dimensions.

Merci, Linda !

No, but it's a localization, not a glossary, issue: we don't give bedding sizes names in France, they are described by their dimensions; so, what other option is there?

Yes, you see, there is no exact equivalence.

Merci, Odile ! En tout cas, perso, je n'en ai jamais vu...
neutral writeaway : the answer says nothing. It's a marketing name.I've never seen it in English. I'd suppose it's bigger than king size. Unless one has the dimensions, just saying it's cm doesn't really help. am sure asker understands it's the size.

I was simply pointing out that there is no equiavlent term in FR; after that, it is up to Asker to deal in their own way with the copywriting problem.

Merci, Petitavoine ! Oui, ça me semble une bonne solution
