: You should have stuck with Rufinus's explanation. It's about the receipt of payment being acknowledged by the notary (see ref below). /but it's French or Belgian notary speak, not UK and it says something else. apples and oranges

Le mot "quittance" est plus particulièrement employé par la pratique en matière de baux à loyer. Dans les actes notariés, pour exprimer que le notaire a constaté un règlement "opéré à sa vue", on dit qu'il l'a "quittancé à l'acte".
