Spanish term

Bosque de Pino Secundario Arbustivo

Spanish to English Science Environment & Ecology
Hello there, I am translating a document from the Mexican government about different ecosystems in Mexico. There are several different terms with the format "Bosque de [Tipo de Árbol] Secundario Arbustivo," so knowing how to translate this term will decipher all such terms for me. Thanks!

Discussion

Chris Ellison Dec 18, 2014:
Matorral Wouldn't you expect to see "matorral" if this was scrub?
Jeffrey Jankowski Dec 16, 2014:
We need more detail about these ecosystems to determine whether the correct translation of "arbustivo" is "shrub" or "scrub". There is a very important difference between the two: shrub refers to a plant that is bush-like in its definitive form, while scrub refers to trees that are shrubby due to environmental factors such as poor soil. This has a huge implication in ecology, for a secondary pine shrub forest will, in the course of succession, will most likely give way to a tree-dominated composition, while a secondary pine scrub forest will probably stay that way due to the limiting environmental factors.

Shrub-like second-growth pine forest

In the U.S., at least, "second-growth" forest refers to forest growing back after clear-cutting, or a fire. "Shrubby" is probably not incorrect, but not something I have ever heard used, at least in the U.S.
Example sentence:

Now second-growth forest, this mountain was once home to a vast indigo plantation

The goats in the Siteia region (18000-20000 animals) are breeds indigenous to Greece that are perfectly adapted to inaccessible areas with limited shrub-like vegetation.

neutral Chris Ellison : Here's a link to the FAO definition of secondary forests. It's fairly common parlance. :o) www.fao.org/docrep/006/j0628e/J0628E10.htm You can see that "shrubby" is equivalent to the first regrowth stage.
