Looking for the best way to translate "растормаживает сферу влечений" within the following context (i.e. from an article warning about the dangers of sex ed in schools):
"...возбуждение преждевременного интереса к сексу вредно как для физического, так и для психического здоровья детей и подростков....А оно, конечно же, вредно, поскольку расшатывает детскую психику, растормаживает сферу влечений...."
TIA for your suggestions :)

Susan Welsh
: It's a bit stiff if this is a popular article. Maybe "lessens sexual inhibitions."

Susan Welsh
: I'm sorry, but this sounds like someone is injecting novocaine into the sexual organs.

The Misha
: Uh-huh, what Susan said. And it all happens in Zombieland. The first half (disinhibits) is totally at odds with the second stylistically, so it becomes like a cross between an article in the Lancet and a Pogo comic.

unleash sexual urges
"Unbrake" sounds stilted in English. I haven't heard it used very often except by my mechanic.
"Unleash" is a good alternative. I grant that it isn't as scholarly as "disinhibit."

disinhibits [sexual] drives
A short investigation reveals that the term влечение in psychology and psychiatry is a drive (S.Freud's theory of drives (теория влечений), L. Szondi's Experimental Diagnostics of Drives (1952) Учебник экспериментальной диагностики влечений). Online dictionaries of psychology:
http://psychologiya.com.ua/v/4086-vlechenie.html
http://www.psychologos.ru/articles/view/vlecheniezpt_dvizhen...
http://psylib.org.ua/books/taiso01/slova.htm
Растормаживание влечений is also a term/ notion in psychology and corresponds to disinhibition of drives there being a special condition described as the disinhibited drive syndrome (pls see the references below).
This looks like an article for the general public so its language needs to be accessible to an average reader (and the variants suggested convey the idea). However the correct term for влечение (in psychology and psychoanalysis) is a drive and the author may have his/her reasons for using a specific term. Сфера in this context seems irrelevant.
