Spanish term

pruebas de investigación preliminar homologadas

Spanish to English Other Other Drug prevention
Hi all. Would greatly appreciate help with this. It's from a report from a drug prevention agency. The phrase is regarding one of the areas of technical assistance that this agency is giving to local antinarcotics forces of the local police: Apoyo a la realización del Curso de capacitación en pruebas de investigación preliminar homologada (PIPH) para drogas de origen natural y sintético. My question is what's the correct way to translate "pruebas de investigación preliminar homologada".

I have found this "preliminary investigation tests" which sounds like it could be right, but I'm not sure if this is it and I'm not sure what "homologada" means here - authorized?

Thanks very much!

Yes As i have indicated with my agreement.
DIANNE BEREST (asker) Jan 26, 2015:
Right Henry (sorry for the slow response). So, Henry and Luke, demonstrating my serious ignorance of the topic, since it's NOT testing people, but rather substances, would Luke's suggestion be the one? Thank you so much.
Henry Hinds Jan 26, 2015:
Testing It does not appear that they are testing people for drug use. It appears that the testing is of substances suspected to be illegal drugs, and the nature thereof must be positively determined in order to charge a suspect.
DIANNE BEREST (asker) Jan 26, 2015:
It doesn't seem that this organization is involved in drug testing - as in testing people for drug use. Their area is more accompanying/support the police and special antinarcotics forces and public prosecutors in investigating drug-related crime and bringing the criminals to trial. Doesn't seem to have anything to do with testing people for drug use... if that's what you're referring to. I wish there was more context I could give you, but the phrase comes within a numbered list of actions implemented by the agency and each one is different.
Luke Mersh Jan 26, 2015:
pruebas Yes Henry, after thinking about it again, I think you are right.
DIANNE BEREST (asker) Jan 26, 2015:
Sorry, the original is "homologada", but I can't say what the intention of the writer was.
Luke Mersh Jan 26, 2015:
my thoughts I believe that homologadas modifys pruebas:
Homologadas meaning approved- therefore I think its referring to the tests/ trials.
Henry Hinds Jan 26, 2015:
Clarification needed As the term consulted, you put "pruebas de investigación preliminar homologadaS", while in the CONTEXT it appears as "pruebas de investigación preliminar homologada". Which is it? Does "homologada(s) modify "pruebas" or "investigación"?

Approved preliminary investigation tests (trials)

Homologada means "approved or certified"
I think in this context pruebas means "trials"
