If you don't want it to sound too much like a word-for-word translation, I suggest rewriting it.

For example:
The exhibition's high level of organization and large number of foreign participants came as a pleasant surprise.
or
We were pleasantly surprised by the exhibition's high level of organization and large number of foreign participants.
