Like alto saxophone: NOT contralto (that's for singers). Not usually called a G flute, though in theory it could be. It's particularly important to distinguish these terms because there is also a contra-alto flute, also sometimes known as a contrabass flute, which is also in G but an octave lower than the alto flute: a fourth below a bass flute.
