Spanish term

repanchingado en el poder

Spanish to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature Political comment
My problema is that I can't find "Repanchingado" in any dictionary. I understand that it means "sprawled out" but that doesn't seem to fit into this text.

This is the context : La realidad es que el partido actualmente repanchingado en el poder ha perdido una gran oportunidad de cambiar a mejor este país y prepararlo para un futuro mucho más exigente, de reforzar las instituciones y de limpiar podredumbres cuya causa está siempre en el exceso y arbitrariedad del poder político.

Thank you for your help

Eileen Brophy (asker) Jun 4, 2015:
Choice I have to choose one and I opted for "wallowing" but think that all are valid.
I am choosing "wallowing" here too, but really do appreciate all your help with this question. <3 <3
Eileen Brophy (asker) Jun 3, 2015:
This text is related to Spain.
Jacob Z. (X) Jun 3, 2015:
I suppose some more context would help here, specifically what party (country) is being referred to? This might help fine-tune the idea of exactly what they are doing...
Eileen Brophy (asker) Jun 3, 2015:
Thank you lorenab23, I understand perfectly, so..... why not post it as an alternative option?
lorenab23 Jun 3, 2015:
@ Eileen repanchingado is used for people (in general) and yes "sprawled out" but in the sense of being way too comfortable as in somebody sprawled out on the couch pants unbuttoned, etc. So the way I read it is that the party in power has gotten way too comfortable...does this make any sense at all?

wallowing

like pigs in their home mud, without achieving anything. Just another possibility!
Note from asker:
Considering this is related to the party in power in Spain at the momento Sophie, I think it is a well earned negative expression!!
Peer comment(s):

agree Charles Davis : Possibly too strong, but suitable if Eileen wants a more pejorative option.

agree Thayenga : With Charles. :)

neutral neilmac : Not keen on the implicit value judgement. Why should pigs "achieve" anything?

I don't mean for the comment about pigs to go into the translation, just 'wallowing in power'. Pigs are quite free to achieve as little or as much as they like; they are definitely more equal than others.

luxuriating in power

This phrase comes to mind; it may work in your context. See some examples at this search link (there are both US and UK examples there):

The term does seem to appear in the online RAE:
http://lema.rae.es/drae/?val=repanchigarse

The connection with sprawling out on the couch is metaphorical in your context, I think.
Peer comment(s):

agree Charles Davis : This will do fine: the connotations are laziness, complacency and enjoying the perks.

agree neilmac : In Spain, I'm told people use "repantingarse" to avoid any hint of "chinga"...

'ensconced' and 'repanchingado' have exactly the same meaning.

verb: ensconce;
establish or settle (someone) in a comfortable, safe, or secret place.
"Agnes ensconced herself in their bedroom"
Peer comment(s):

agree neilmac : Good option, without going overboard subjectively, however repulsive the current regime IMHO.
