「顕微鏡を使い、研磨がちゃんとされているかどうかを検査」はありうる解釈と思います。オーバーラップの省略と考えるより、可能性は高そうです。それならば、"inspection of the polished surfaces using a microscope"。

Lap/lapping
To lap a surface (lapping - see wikipedia below) is to flatten and polish a surface, such as that of a wafer, to very high tolerances. In semiconductor manufacture one would immediately think of CMP (see links below). Typically you will see references to lapping and polishing and maybe a more specific application such as inter-metal dielectric (IMD). Often the lapping process uses an abrasive slurry.
