French term

rabattue sur

French to English Other Philosophy
From an academic paper on Neoplatonism. This particular passage is about Plotinus' "On the Kinds of Being" (Ennead VI):

The idea is this distinction should not be reduced to/merged with the other division, but I like "aligned with" because there is a sort of visual imagery with "rabbatue sur" that I think this retains a trace of.

"Folded into" the distinction isn't impossible, but a bit contrived I think.

made to fall back on -> rest upon, rely on

I think the connection is closer to the meaning of "rabattre sur, se rabattre sur;" you might pursue that line of reasoning.

understood as a variant of

An equivalent of the French "assimilable à", to be reduced to / or tantamount to / but in this particular context it really means "A-A' relation should not be understood as a variant of the B-B' relation" or "A-A' should not be regarded as B-B' under another guise" etc.

Not sure what the best E phrase would be here but the meaning is this.

Actually, "subsume" could be a better term in a text on Plotin :
