Thanks for the answers provided. I agree that more context should be given. From the context from bits of passage, the five people here only stick to what they did and rejected what others did in terms of the actions taken in women's liberation demonstration.

Ambiguous "Narrow" could mean narrow-minded, in the sense of prejudiced and intolerant, but it could also mean that the people concerned are knowledgeable about a very narrow range of subjects. "Ultra-serious" indicates the latter, but "closed-off" could indicate the former. Fuller context is needed to know which of these meanings is intended. It could even be both.
