Spanish term

de 5 y 6 eslabones.

Spanish to English Science Chemistry; Chem Sci/Eng Chemistry // organic Chemistry
My problem is how to translate the word "eslabones" to English in this context.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much

Autores: A. Barbero, Y. Blanco, P. Castreño, F.J. Pulido*, C. Sañudo y P.Val. Título: Síntesis de

compuestos sililados y su empleo en la construcción de carbociclos de 5 y 7 eslabones.

5 and 6-membered oxygenated heterocyclic rings

Here "eslabon" refers to the "members" in the ring.

Both carbon and silicon have a valence of 4 and so do not form 5 or 6 "links" or "bonds".

In other contexts, "link" may be the correct form.

Although a better translation for "heterociclos oxigenados de 5 y 6 eslabones" might be "five or six-membered oxygenated heterocycles"...

Nevertheless, I hasten to add that although I do translate scientific texts occasionally, I am no expert, so I recommend waiting to see what our colleagues suggest or comment.

NB: See Neil-A's notes below for a more scientifically-grounded explanation.
Peer comment(s):

agree Neil Ashby : I'm being tight if I don't agree with your added note. Nevertheless I must stress that "bond" (link is never used to refer to chemical bonds) would most definitely be incorrect and misleading./But it isn't other contexts, both bond & link are wrong here.

Yeah, but the asker wanted "eslabones" and I did point out that in other contexts, "link" may be the correct form. Just trying to cover all angles. I consistently failed science at school, which is why I did languages :-)
