Romanian term

Ofisul Domnului

Discussion

Dictionarist translations may be simply wrong Each term pertains to its own context. Whatever the dictionary says about all the possible meanings of the term, I shudder to think of translations made based on dictionary justifications. Imperial in this context is wrong. Imperial may also denote arrogance.
Lara Barnett Jan 21, 2016:
@ Sandra & Kenneth I hear what you are saying, but not so "funny in its grandiloquence" when you consider the fact that the term "imperial decree" is not solely limited to describe decrees issued from an "empire".

"IMPERIAL DECREE"
Meaning:
A decree issued by a sovereign ruler

@ Lara The use of "imperial" with reference to a Romanian principality is simply wrong (and funny in its grandiloquence).
Lara Barnett Jan 20, 2016:
@ Adami The use of "imperial" in English is not limited only to the description of "empires". You will see more info on this in the third definition listed in this dictionary entry:

"Characterizing the rule or authority of a sovereign state over its dependencies."

" In 1795, BY IMPERIAL DECREE, Masonic activity was outlawed in the Habsburg empire, including Transylvania. In Wallachia, the first lodge was very likely established by Jean Louis Carra, secretary to voivode Grigore III Ghica (October 1768-November 1769)."

In English this term has a looser meaning than that of a decree issued from only an "empire" or on an empirical level.

"IMPERIAL DECREE"
Meaning:
A decree issued by a sovereign ruler

i.e. Can relate to decrees issued by ANY sovereign ruler.
Example sentence:

"Imperial Decree of declaration of war against foreign powers"

"After Herod's death his palace there was given to his sister Salome BY IMPERIAL DECREE (War 2:98)."

Peer comment(s):

agree adami : Princely decree (Wallachia was a Principality/voivodeship).//Does not apply in the historical context. In that age and context, ”Imperial” would have referred to one thing only, the Austro-Hungarian Empire (which Wallachia was not part of).

Yes, possibly, but "imperial decree" would still be understood as coming from a sovereign family./// Not in UK English - See my discussion box entry.

As above.
disagree Sandra & Kenneth Grossman : Royal Decree//vezi referinta DEX
