Discussion

neilmac Feb 10, 2016:
My mechanic says: "Cofre" is actually the boot/trunk, but sometimes people use it (erroneously) to refer to the engine housing (vano motor) as well. He says he would need to know more about the fault being checked/repaired before being able to tell which part they are talking about. Some electrical assemblies are beneath the dashboard (salpicadero) and in Skodas there is a boxy-looking panel thingy just in front of the steering wheel, under the bonnet/hood, which they might also be referring to. I'd guess it's probably the junction/fuse box biged mentions.
Helena Chavarria Feb 9, 2016:
And it would be nice if we knew the country where the source text comes from. I used to know quite a bit about cars because I used to help my father 'do' things to the car, but now the engines are hidden under covers so you have to go to a garage!
Charles Davis Feb 9, 2016:
By the way, phoning a Skoda dealer is not a bad idea.
Charles Davis Feb 9, 2016:
@Helena Seems perfectly reasonable to me, and confidence 2 is consistent with that.
Helena Chavarria Feb 9, 2016:
@Charles I posted an answer because I know we're not supposed to answer in the discussion box or reference area. I thought my idea could help somebody come up with a better suggestion. It would be easier if we knew the type of vehicle: a car or lorry/truck.

My car broke down again today ... for the 3rd time this year, so I'll be seeing my mechanic tomorrow and I'll ask him.
Charles Davis Feb 9, 2016:
@Matt Nor do I, but another possibility might be the compartment under the armrest, where I think there are sometimes electrical bits. See:

James A. Walsh Feb 9, 2016:
No idea... Haven't a clue about about testing motors either!
matt robinson (asker) Feb 9, 2016:
yes, I know the bonnet/hood possibility, but is this what they are saying. I know nothing about testing motors!
James A. Walsh Feb 9, 2016:
Here's a definition from the OSD: B (México) (capó) hood (inglés norteamericano), bonnet (inglés británico).

neutral Charles Davis : Can you show that "cofre" means or can mean this?

neutral philgoddard : Maybe, but this doesn't justify a 5 with no Spanish references.

test box

I have a feeling that the 'cofre' might not be inside the car.

Check wiring between the 68-pin gearbox control unit and the gearbox
carry out, if:
t the final control diagnosis or
t the electrical test points to faults in or between gearbox and automatic gearbox control unit -J217 -.
Test requirements:
t Ignition off.
t Connect test box e.g. -V.A.G 1598/18- only to 68-pin connector of gearbox wiring harness.

I've since found 'cofre' is used to refer to engine bay.

Maria apparently forgot to tell you that "Cofre" is also a very common term for the engine bay in a car/truck, etc. And the trunk of a car is called "La cajuela."

My comment about engines being hidden under covers made me search for the term with different keywords. Because I've given an answer, I can't post a reference but if you search for 'debajo del cofre' you'll see it can refer to a vehicle's engine bay/compartment.

"Cofre" is the engine bay and "capó" is the hood covering the engine bay, although in México when we say "Abre el cofré", we really mean "open the hood" and not the entire engine bay. And KiwiGirl is right - it´s regional usage.

Hi, Charles! No, I can't, which is why I start my suggestion with 'I have a feeling...' and I have a 'low' confidence level. I thought of phoning a Skoda garage but I couldn't spend more time on this question. It's just an idea.
