Discussion

katsy Feb 21, 2016:
It could well be oral - given that DST are mentioned.
In higher education there are regular oral tests called "colles", or more formally "interrogations orales".
However, the term in itself is not clear enough. So I personally would just say "test".
Katherine Rutter Feb 21, 2016:
It is an examination. Test would also be correct, but I think examination might be more appropriate in an official document like this. It is not a class - this is a transcript of someone's results. Each module is assessed on several components - for example the Maths one has two "DSTs", two examinations, and a project.
Jana Cole (asker) Feb 21, 2016:
This is a computer science program.

Is it a whole class devoted to testing?

Tests

The context does not make it possible to know whether these are written or oral tests.
See: http://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/french-english/i...

You may also want to do a search using "interrogation" = "test"

agree katsy : I suspect it perhaps is oral (see discussion box). However the term here is not clear enough for asker to be more precise than "test" IMO

agree Nikki Scott-Despaigne : Often, but not always, oral, so this is th best solution without further context.

oral tests

my take
Peer comment(s):

neutral Chakib Roula : They could also be written tests not necessarily oral ones.

agree Lisa Jane : I would say the DSTs are written and these are oral exams. Also in Italy we use the term only for oral exams or tests.

viva voce

An oral examination consisting of having to answer oral questions.
Peer comment(s):

neutral katsy : an "interrogation" can be written or oral. Not clear in this context.
6 hrs
neutral Nikki Scott-Despaigne : "viva voce" back translates quite well to "soutenance" and is thus for an oral on a dissertation or a thesis which can probably be ruled out here.
