I can't provide any evidence for this - it just fits the context. And plancha means a sheet or panel, among other things, so I think it's more likely than "stake".

: Seems plausible (I just posted an additional link which suggests the sunflowers themselves act as a windbreak). I also did include "plancha" in my explanation/1 conf. Regards. (Ignore my answer as I think yours in more like it).

: makes most sense.They don't want sunflowers to topple over in wind so rather than using individual stakes (time consuming in a field) they use panels etc.
