Portuguese term

brindou com sua presença

Portuguese to English Art/Literary Journalism conversation
this is part of a transcript of a eulogy for a prominent member of a group.

"... Fulana brindou com sua presença vários pesquisadores com suas contribuições em bancas de qualificação e defesas de mestrado e doutorado..."

I am thinking "honoured / graced with her presence", but this reminds me of the Queen, so I believe it is a bit too much, isn't it?
any suggestions appreciated...

Discussion

Bett (asker) Mar 28, 2016:
thank you all for your invaluable contributions! Have a nice week!
Richard Purdom Mar 21, 2016:
then Kim's answer or version of it looks best to me in its limited hyperbole, like 'A number of researchers enjoyed the privilege of her presence and help...'

btw 'contributions' is not the right way to go with 'contribuições' imho
Bett (asker) Mar 21, 2016:
Bett (asker) Mar 21, 2016:
sorry my mistake The sentence in the question is correct

Richard Purdom Mar 21, 2016:
Different text here and in question That text is not the same as in the question! 'honoured many researchers with her bla bla' makes much more sense
Bett (asker) Mar 21, 2016:
This is a text that is going to be used (either read or published) as a tribute to a Professor (Ph D.) who contributed abundantly to her field of study. the portuguese is as follows:
"Durante sua carreira, XXXXX contribuiu constantemente para a produção científica da Educação brasileira. Participou de projetos de pesquisas, colaborando com pesquisadores brasileiros; recebeu estudantes e docentes de cursos de Pós-Graduação para estágios de pesquisa nos Estados Unidos; esteve no Brasil como professor visitante em várias instituições; participou de inúmeros eventos científicos brasileiros; e brindou vários pesquisadores com suas contribuições em bancas de qualificação e defesas de mestrado e doutorado."
Lara Barnett Mar 21, 2016:
@ Bett: Meaning... I would use "Captivated with her presence..", but the problem is here that "com sua presenca", as well as "com suas contribucoes em bancas..." both seem to related to "brindou". Can you explain how you intend to structure the second half of the sentence? Can you also confirm what exact level of study or research this situation relates to?

given the privilege of

I would write the phrase like this...

Several researchers were given the privilege of her (Fulana´s) contributions...

agree Richard Purdom : or 'enjoyed the privilege'

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you! this fits best "

attracted

This seems to be the meaning: her presence (because of her prominence in the field) attracted graduate students to enroll in the program in question (for this seems to be the context).

was instrumental among (several researchers with her contributions)

Another suggestion.

or
... had an instrumental presence / role among...
Example sentence:

Babu was instrumental among a cadre of activists who charted a path from Islamic modernism to Pan-Africanism and Third World Marxism.

The younger Gamsakhurdia was instrumental among a group of young men and women who, beginning in the late 1960s, spearheaded a religious-national

Thank you, Andre!
neutral Lara Barnett : But this is incorrect usage of "instrumental to" - the references do not seem to relate to your proposed answer as the usage is completely different. You would normally say "instrumental to... (e.g. to an event which eventually came to fruition.)

benefited from her highly esteemed contributions

Several researchers have benefited from her highly esteemed contributions (or highly appreciated contributions)...
Peer comment(s):

agree Danielle Soler

Thanks, Danielle!
disagree Richard Purdom : nobody said anything was highly esteemed, or appreciated: in answering your comment, your answer says that her contributions were highly esteemed, not her presence. And, look at the text in the db, looks like the text in the question is wrong anyway.

If you don't like it, just change it to Several researchers have benefited from her highly esteemed presence and contributions (which is the same thing, by the way: probably her presence is esteemed exactly because of her contributions).

...has captivated many students/researchers

"Fulana has captivated many students/researchers through her contributions..." etc....

I still see the problem (for the English) with attributing "com" twice to the same verb: i.e.
"...with her presence / with her contributions"
"...com sua presença / com suas contribuições "

visited [the group of researchers ...] and graciously) shared [... her contributions]]

Turn it around and break it up:

She visited the group of researchers ... and graciously shared her contributions.

graced with her presence

I prefer Bett’s original suggestion. The text is a bit over the top, so I don’t think it matters a bit if it “sounds like the Queen.”

and graced several researchers with her presence and contributions at master’s and PhD dissertation defense committee
