In the courts where I work sometimes a conflict attorney is assigned to an indigent defendant when the public defender's office can't represent him because of a conflict of interest. The public defender's office might be representing a client involved in the same matter, for example, or the defendant has some sort of relationship with someone at the public defender's office. Any ideas?

A conflict attorney is a private attorney who works with, but not for, the public defender's office. A lawyer can only represent one defendant per case as multiple defendants have conflicting interests.
