Also, the fact that some Greek civil servant in the Ministry of Development and Competitiveness decided to describe ‘Εξοδα διάθεσης’ in the way that he or she did only defines what that particular person determined ‘Εξοδα διάθεσης’ to mean in his or her individual text, and can hardly be accepted to be an authoritative interpretation of the words that everybody in the world should accept.

We are all entitled to our opinions. Πώληση is selling. Διανομή is distribution. Διάθεση comes from the verb διαθέτω, and can mean selling, trading, distribution, turnover, transferring, willing, bequeathing, bestowing, sparing, disposal, allocating or making something available, but not necessarily in that order. Therefore, for anyone to say that διάθεση only means one of the above alternatives is quite arbitrary. Also, distribution involves selling, because no manufacturer or importer in his right mind transfers a product to a wholesaler or retailer for free or without a firm obligation for him to pay for the goods. I have provided internet links to confirm that the term ‘distribution operation expenses’ is a recognised term in accounting. It is certainly an option that I would consider seriously if I were translating Ioanna’s text, especially if it suited the overall context of the text she is translating.

I think I disagree. Selling is διάθεση, distribution is διανομή.

With all due respect to Erenta and the translators who agreed with her back in June, 2014, I have three dictionaries that define ΄διάθεση’ in this sense to mean ‘distribution’. Having been an importer myself for 35 years, I know very well that there is a huge difference between ‘distribution’ and ‘selling’. I therefore feel that ‘Εξοδα Λειτουργίας Διάθεσης’ really refers to ‘distribution operation expenses’, which is a recognised accounting term. See:
