noted
In agreeing to JaneD's suggestion as one possibility, "noted" came to mind. I'm posting it as a suggestion as it can cover the meaning of the doors having been seen/observed but also noted in some for of written record. Might be a helpful solution.

Comment: "Thanks, Nikki. I am opting for this because it retains the ambiguity of the source text. It includes observed and recorded. "

surveyed
This is more often how it's put in archaeological texts (rather than "recorded"), although it does depend on the context*. You can make it "surveyed in detail" for clarification, if you like.

: This is indeed one possible reading, although as you point out, others are possible (ex: observed, noted, detected, seen). However, there is nothing in the original to justify the addition of "in detail". More context needed.

Discussion
http://www.universalis.fr/encyclopedie/topographie/1-le-leve...
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lever_topographique
exemple d'usage incorrect mais courant:
http://www.idsfrance.com/nos_metiers/Acquisition_IDS.asp
les traces des portes peuvent se signaler en topographie par des enfoncements locaux de terrain dus aux passages, par des crêtes perpendiculaires dues aux bordures de route, par un plat dans un terrain en pente...
Unfortunately, there are no other clues in the preceding or succeeding paragraphs. hence my confusion!!!
If it can mean "indentified" it might mean "found", again, depending on context.
