@Craig "Trägerfläche" should usually be something akin to "medium," but in your case - since you cannot reference the source here - what about showing this one around:

Page 9 talks about Trägerfläche. Searching for the term turned up some examples describing it as background for text. It literally provides the "space" (=Fläche) to "carry" (=Träger) the message.

Yes, it would do, but it doesn't differentiate "Farb-" from "Träger-" flächen.

And although I have a 'satisfactory' answer, I assume my peers here will be a rich source of 'more than just satisfactory' suggestions ;-)

You describe them as oblique bars of colour - wouldn't that do as a translation?

Really you need to see the image, but I can't post that here. Running from top right to bottom middle there are 'oblique' bars of colours, some very thin and some 'flächig', which are, in the broadcast, animated. Presumably they increase in scope to cover up the first video sequence and then reduce in scope to reveal the subsequent sequence.
