The conclusions were damning to say the least

English to Spanish Science General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
I would like to know the best translation of this phrase from American English into Latin American Spanish. It's a translation for a conference about water contamination.

Here is the full paragraph for your review:

The conclusions were damning to say the least. In both human and animal studies, PFOS has been linked to maladies such as: cancer, delays in physical development, stunted growth, endocrine (hormonal) disruption, neonatal mortality, and most recently immunosuppression. While there is a lot of bad news regarding PFOS, there is some light at the end of the tunnel.

Jun 21, 2016 03:06: changed "Kudoz queue" from "In queue" to "Public"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (2): Valentina LG, M. C. Filgueira

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Las conclusiones fueron abrumadoras por no decir más

Note from asker:
Thank you so much Yaotl.
Peer comment(s):

agree Pablo Martínez (X) : Tratándose de una conferencia, algo más formal sería: "Las conclusiones fueron, cuando menos, abrumadoras".

Thanx!
neutral ael : I fail to understand the choice of “abrumadoras”. “Damning”means condemnatory, damnatory, damaging, calamitous, cataclysmic, catastrophic, fatal, disastrous, ruinous, strongly suggesting guilt or error, causing or leading to condemnation or ruin

¿Lo abrumador no te parece ´catastrófico, fatal, desastroso y/o ruinoso? :)
agree Pablo Cruz : Se puede traducir libre/ por abrumadora sin la menor duda en este contexto. Saludos

Merci!
neutral Valentina LG : I agree with ael. "Abrumadoras" has nothing to do with "damning", and I don't see the need to alter the meaning, even if the practical consequences are minor or null.

Incluso: "las conclusiones fueron censurables/condenables/reprobables" podrían ser opciones válidas.
