I agree on the sense with Barbara and Giovanni, but I think it is important to keep the "culinary" register somehow.

They hatched a scheme/a plot to ruin him/kill him...

Not sure if the term "concocting" sounds too formal, but at least has some "cooking" reference even if by the derivation (concoct = to boil together = cook.)

"Cook" in the sense of "ruin, spoil" may also work, as in "they devised a plan to cook him"...
