In 2010, only 51% of the population of sub-Saharan Africa had access to safe water. In the same year, only 45 percent of the African population had access to sanitation. It is estimated that by 2025 almost 50 percent of Africans will be living in an area of water scarcity or water stress. Five African countries – Kenya, Morocco, Rwanda, Somalia and South Africa – are expected to face water scarcity within the next 10 years. These specific estimates on the lack of access to safe drinking water ***should be tempered against the broader role of water as part of the environmental life-support system and its pivotal domestic, agricultural and industrial uses.
