Norwegian term

geite seg til

Norwegian to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature common speech
"Antagelig hadde hun dag etter dag stått som en påfugl foran speilet mens hun geitet seg til og glante på sitt eget speilbilde."

I can't seem to find a translation for this phrase.

Discussion

Vedis Bjørndal Jun 22, 2017:
"Geitet(e)", adjective with meaning 2) "jålet(e)" I could not find the verb "å geite seg til" in any dictionary, but I found the adjective "geitet" in "Bokmålsordboka/Nynorskordboka" (online version) withe the meaning "jålete". "Å jåle seg til" could well fit in with the context. I haven't found an English term for this, but it means basically that you try any remedy (make up, jewellery or hairdo) to make yourself look OK or better. It may have slightly negative connotations.

"geit" can mean a vain or conceited person and "glane" means to stare at. [norsk>engelsk blå ordbok Kunnskapsforlaget]
