English term

Outside Counsel

English to Spanish Bus/Financial Other Outside counsel agreement
Hello colleagues,

First of all, I will mention that this project has Spanish for Spain as its target language.

Although I understand this term well, it seems there are many solutions to its translation, so I turn to you to give me your ideas on which is the best of the possible translations.

I have considered:

asesores legales externos
abogados externos
servicios jurídicos externos
asesores externos

I would appreciate hearing from you on these options or others that I have not thought of as to which would be the best Spanish terminology for this English phrase.

Here is some context:

OUTSIDE COUNSEL

ENGAGEMENT STANDARDS

EXPECTATIONS

XXXX (“XXX” or “Company”) expects its outside counsel to ethically provide XXX and its business unit companies with the highest quality legal services in the most cost-effective manner possible. These Engagement Standards (“Standards”) govern the relationship of XXX with its outside counsel and apply to all XXX business units. Information regarding XXX, its business units and products can be found at http://www.xxx.com. References to “XXX” in these Standards include all XXX subsidiaries, business units and divisions, and legal department personnel at XXX. “Outside counsel” and “law firm” are used interchangeably throughout these Standards.

Thank you very much in advance.

CHOICE I just did some quick research, and apparently they call them "asesores legales" in Spain. FYI, they call them "asesores jurídicos" in Colombia.

asesores legales externos / abogados externos

There is no single translation for this term, so you will have to pick the one that best suits you. However, looking at Spanish law firm websites, it seems that asesores legales externos would seem to be the most common way to put it, closely followed by abogados externos. The first way sounds slightly more elegant, I would say, and correlates better with asesoría legal externa, so it might be best to use this term for its flexibility.

abogados externos

My first tendency was to suggest "asesores/asesoría externa", as the first option.

But taking into account the context provided, I would use "abogados externos".

(While I have been been living in Southern California for 3 decades now, I am from Barcelona, Spain.)

I am no expert on this, so my "medium" confidence level is based on a "street level" approach to it.

Let's see what other ProZ.com colleagues say... :-)
