Spanish term

Tribunal Noveno de Primera lnstancia Estadal en Función de Control del Circuito

Spanish to English Law/Patents Law (general) legal proceedings
Good afternoon/evening,

I am working on a court case document from a South American country into Bristish English concerning criminal activity by nationals from this South American country.

Where I am lost is where to place the word Control: I am not sure if it should be: 'Ninth Control Court of the Crimninal Judicial Circuit of...'. or 'Ninth Court of Control of the Criminal Judicial Circuit of...'.

I would really appreciater anyone's expertise given that despite lots of expereince in legal work and legal contracts, this is the first time I have come across this term.

Thanbk you in adavnce for any assistance provided.

Best regards,

Richie Levy

Court No. 9 of First Instance exercising supervision of the Circuit

Never seen this before and of course no direct equivalent in England & Wales.
However, my hunch is that the courts of first instance all numbered (this one being No, 9 and the supervisory court within the circuit).

Yo don't say which country this is froim.

Wikipedia has pretty good entries on the court structures of many countries. Have you checked?

Hello Allegro Tarsn..it is from Venezuela..I was hesitant about 'revealing' too much information. Thanks for chiming in on this. I have a few more pages to translate then I will have to decide how to translate that term based on the responses from our great cilleagues!

Ninth Court of First Instance acting as Preliminary Proceedings Court of the...

I have a low confidence level because although I would probably use 'Court of First Instance' some people might not agree as there is no exact equivalent in the UK.

As regards 'en función de', I'm not sure whether it means 'on duty' or 'acting as'.

High Court
Main article: High Court of Justice
The High Court of Justice functions both as a civil court of first instance and a criminal and civil appellate court for cases from the subordinate courts.

The Crown Court is a criminal court of both original and appellate jurisdiction which in addition handles a limited amount of civil business both at first instance and on appeal.

Note from asker:
I know what you are \referring to Helena. In fact the term does recur in vsrious forms with or without 'Circuito', as well as in the following way which really confuses the $%^&*() out of me...[lol] : - Juez Novena de Control de Caracas - Juez Noveno de Primera lnstancia en Funciones de Control del Circuito Judicial Penal - Tribunal Novena de Primera lnstancia Estadal en Funciones de Control del Circuito Judicial Penal and so on. All I can say is that I thank you all very much for what you offered up to now.
