Russian term

улитка

Russian to English Tech/Engineering Military / Defense
Наши корректировщики постоянно наводили на цель: «2 по „улитке“ 7… левее… правее… возьми на 5 метров прямее…» (Положение цели в квадрате уточняется двумя способами: по «улитке» — квадрат делят на 9 частей, кото-рые обозначают цифрами, цифру, уточняющую местоположение объекта внутри квадрата, добавляют при указании к обозначению квадрата, например, E2, и по улитке — 7).

Despite this explanation contained in the context, I can't think of a way to translate "улитка" in this meaning.
Proposed translations (English)
3 spiral
3 helix

Jack, thank you, as well for grading my answer :)
VASKON Jun 2, 2018:
Snail ? Why not "7 by "shail" or "snail" - 7" ?
And the explanation follows the term.
Obviously "улитка" is used for the shape of the subnet resembles a snail, and also because the word sounds distinctly.

What is used in UK army/navy for specification of the position in a big square?
