Spanish term

lavadero

Spanish to English Other Construction / Civil Engineering descripción de un lugar

¡Gracias!

Discussion

Charles Davis Oct 20, 2018:
By the way, the expression "washing place" is certainly authentic. It's been used in English for the simplest kind of "lavadero" since at least the beginning of the eighteenth century.

Otra variante podría ser lavandero

Charles Davis Oct 20, 2018:
This one, for example, is a washhouse (in my opinion):

But this one I would call a washing place:

Charles Davis Oct 20, 2018:
@Sonia It depends what kind of construction it was. If it was just a stone area with a natural supply of water where you could do your washing, it would be called a washing place. If it had a roof, you'd probably call it a wash house or lavoir, even if it was small and unsophisticated.

This excellent example of the collaboration between Brueghel and Momper depicts simple rural life in Flanders, joining the genre of landscape painting with that of everyday life.

public wash house, or coumunal laundry

Although, 'house' implies an enclosed place, they are almost always open air, sometimes with a protecting roof.

It is certainly an improvement over laundering in the river and brings to mind the depiction, in The Forging of a Rebel, by Arturo Barea of his mother washing clothes in winter,in the frozen Manzanres River, in Madrid, and having to break the ice and wash in freezing water.
