The "base" is an often-used term in politics nowadays, to refer to the core supporters of a party or candidate. I don't know how much it's used in the UK, but in US politics you hear about politicians "preaching to the base" or "keeping the base happy" almost daily.

In fact, to me, the Spanish looks like a calque of "base" because I haven't seen it used in this way before.
If you want to be more specific, you can use "political base", but "base" on its own is readily understandable as a political term.
That suggests the resistance to Trump may be more intense than support among his base.

grassroots base
I don't see how you can avoid 'grassroots'. In the work I do with international organizations, "la base" is consistently translated that way.
