Spanish term

absorber el alza

Spanish to English Other Finance (general)
Las plantas de cogeneración aumentaron su cifra de negocio un 5% a pesar de mantener su nivel de producción de energía, debido a la subida de los precios de venta de la energía, fundamentalmente por el incremento del precio de casación del mercado eléctrico. En todo caso, este incremento fue insuficiente para ***absorber el alza del 20% ***en el precio del combustible lo que ha provocado una reducción de los resultados.

¿Sería correcto utilizar absorb the 20% rise... en este contexto?

Gracias!

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Sonia Please could you post your questions under the correct heading. They're not about marketing or economics - economía means finance in this context.

withstand the (20%) hike

For example. Other wordings are possible. In this example, "hike" means a rise or increase. And of course, you could use "absorb" instead of "withstand"...

Example sentence:

... the UK's economy was now strong enough to withstand the hike.

On the whole, the buffer of these productivity gains should help the economy withstand the rise in input costs...

agree philgoddard : Absorb. I don't think withstand is quite right.

to offset the hike

I think this is also a possibility and works in this context.
Example sentence:

While announcing the increase the Central Government suggested that the State Governments bring down VAT to help offset the hike.

he had urged the farm ministry to raise the price at which government buys grains from local farmers to offset the hike in diesel prices.

absorb the 20% increase/difference

We typically use 'absorb' in this context. Normally, the word 'increase' would be the translation, but it's already used in the sentence, so I'm suggesting 'difference' to avoid repetition.
