English to French Medical Medical: Instruments shoulder surgery (rotator

I am slightly puzzled as to how to translate this very common word, when it is used as a noun without any adjective or other specification.

ie the development (not meaning l'évolution either)

Here is the context, which I do of course understand, but am not sure if such an expression exists in French.
"During the *development period* from 2004 to 2006, the knowledge base was given by the Grammont design as well as correlative biomechanical and clinical studies .
General goals of * a development* were to keep proven features from former generations and exclude causes of failure, but not at the expense of successful characteristics."

Il est sous-entendu qu'il s'agit du développement d'une nouvelle prothèse.
Je ne trouve pas que ce mot utilisé comme dans le texte, sonne bien en anglais et j'hésite à le traduire en français à l'aide du seul terme "un développement "

Les objectifs généraux * d’un développement* sont de préserver les caractéristiques éprouvées des générations précédentes...

Je ne trouve jamais ce terme dans un texte français, sans qualification supplémentaire.
