Japanese to English Bus/Financial Mining & Minerals / Gems Coal mining terminology

I am working on an academic paper about technological innovations leading to increased coal production in Japanese coalmines in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

My questions has to do with a part of a coal mine called “卸おろし,” or just “卸”. It appears in the following passage.

それまで用いられていた残柱式採炭法では，炭層の傾斜に沿って作られた卸おろし（大阪地方職業紹介事務局，1926，11 頁．主要な傾斜道はすべて卸と呼ばれた），それに直交する走向方向にいくつかの片磐坑道（炭層の走向とほぼ平行に作られた採炭を行うための水平坑道のこと（大阪地方職業紹介事務局，1926，11 頁），「片盤」とも書く）を掘進し，上下の片磐坑道間に坑道保護のため10‒20 間（1 間≒1.8 メートル）角の炭柱を残して，碁盤の目のように1‒2 間幅の切羽，一丁切羽をつけて採炭していた（荻野，1993，18 頁）．

I wonder if this might not be “chute,” but am not sure. Does anyone know what this refers to?
