Performing gardening tasks by the phases of the moon is as old as written history and is based on beliefs that phases of the moon indicate the moon's influence over living things. The periodic lunar cycle — the distance of the moon from the Earth's surface, described as the ascending or descending moon — is purported to have as much effect on a tree's reaction to pruning as the more familiar synodic lunar cycle — commonly called phases of the moon and described as waxing, waning, new and full.

Check your lunar calendar to find the new moon, when the moon is barely visible from earth, and the apogee — lowest point — of the periodic lunar cycle when the moon is farthest from earth. The days following the new moon are waxing moonlight days, when the brightness of the moon is increasing, and the days following the apogee are ascending days as the moon comes up higher in the sky each night. The increased moonlight and increased gravitational pull on plant fluids causes faster growth of new plant tissue, helping young trees get a quicker start.
