Spanish term

encamisado de la cerda

Spanish to English Other Livestock / Animal Husbandry Setting up a pig farm
The text is about setting up a pig farm, it is written by a veterinarian. Does this just mean once the sow has been impregnated or is there another meaning? The word "encamisar" also appears subsequently, but is stand-alone, in a table. The other option I came up with was "confined"

Full sentence:
Así, se reduce a la mitad el tiempo de adaptación entre **el encamisado de la cerda** y el parto, lo que permite ceder la otra mitad de ese tiempo a la camada, desde que nace hasta el destete

Discussion

Rachel Fell Apr 7, 2020:
Like neilmac... and limiting answers to paying members does not seem a sound move. They're called sow stalls/crates in the UK, but they have been been made illegal here:

"Sow stalls are illegal in Sweden and the UK. Their use is limited in the EU, with a partial ban enforced from 2013. However..."

Unfortunately, I am no longer a paying member,... so I'm unable to post an answer or even agree with John's answer (which I do). It refers to the adaptation period, starting from when the sow goes into the unit (or cage) until farrowing.

Definition Jaulas para la maternidad
También llamadas camisas de parto, son jaulas de tubo metalico en donde permanecen las cerdas enclaustradas desde 2 días previos al parto hasta 8 días después del parto o hasta al destete.

Therefore:
encamisar = enjaular

farrowing cage or crate

Giuliana explained it really well. They call these kinds of cages farrowing crates or farrowing cages in English, at least here in the USA. There may be another term in the UK; I don't know. Google it and you'll find lots of pictures.
Peer comment(s):

agree Taña Dalglish : https://www.viva.org.uk/pigs/farrowing-crate-fact-sheet (I think you are right and appears to be the same term used in the UK. However, the method seems almost barbaric, at the very least, this article's tone is quite negative, IMO).

I definitely agree that the method is controversial to say the very least and am personally in favor of more sustainable practices.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks, I think we call them stalls, which is less pejorative than crate or cage. I know they are illegal, but this article comes from South America I think."
