"Current area of need" is an ordinary expression as well as a highly specific and acute expression (e.g "a Current Area of Need Certificate").
Therefore it would not be unidiomatic to say "The main current area of need for research relates to [certain legislative proposals]", or "There is a major current need for research relating to [certain legislative proposals]".
