Discussion

Daryo Jul 30, 2020:
@ Asker I have the feeling you rushed a bit ...

Take a look at the reference - coming straight form the horse's mouth, i.e. a French manufacturer of water counters.

Also, from what I could find, it's simply called the "calibre" in EN (and not only in Chinglish, I took that in account)
claude-andrew Jul 29, 2020:

chris collister Jul 28, 2020:
@ Carla As Tony says, "calibre" can often just mean "size" though there is often an implication that some part of the item is circular. I have seen vegetables described in terms of their calibre ! On the other hand, small or large bore might be perfectly acceptable in this particular hydraulic context, with "diameter" being slightly less specific.
Tony M Jul 28, 2020:
@ Asker In many technical fields (including electricity), 'calibre' is about the size (often capacity) rating; this is usually confirmed by the units used, e.g. for electricity, Amps or mm², or perhaps for water, m³/hr. I doubt that it means literally 'bore' here — though of course, the flow rating might also be associated with a change of pipe diameter.
Carla Selyer (asker) Jul 28, 2020:
Well, essentially, that is why I am posting this question: you can calibrate a meter, however, the term 'calibre' seems to be used in relation to weapons. It could be a gauge, but I could not find references to meters and gauges in terms of small gauge or large gauge. If I just describe it as a small or large meter, it doesn't seem to be enough. Maybe I am overanalysing things...
Carol Gullidge Jul 28, 2020:
Well, Carla, what are your own ideas regarding these two terms? In your opinion, what might they be?
What ideas have you considered and rejected?

small (size) water meter

Another source that refers to 'small size water meters': https://www.projproc.com/tender/11033-supply-small-size-wate...

‘Calibre’ refers to the pipe diameter, the NPS (Nominal Pipe Size), or DN (le diamètre nominal):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nominal_Pipe_Size

https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/nps-nominal-pipe-sizes-d_...

Another possibility is ‘jet meters (single-jet and multi-jet) and displacement meters’ for ‘compteurs d'eau de petit calibre’.

And ‘turbine meter’ or ‘bulk (flow) water meters’ for ‘compteurs d'eau gros calibre’.

Working from this classification:

low-capacity meter

One possible way of handling this, which might well work in this context...

Thank you.

agree philgoddard : I agree with all these answers, but you were first. "Calibre" would work too.

low flow water meter

It could be this but I'm not sure if this means that the meter is capable of detecting low flows or limits the flow to low. Both meanings seem to be suggested in my references

"calibre" is translated as "diameter" when talking of arteries in medical texts.

Thank you, Liz.

disagree Daryo : whatever the medical profession does with "calibre" when it comes to water meters, it's not a "diameter"

"Compteurs d’eau" for beginners ...

For the "caliber" 15 (the smallest) the diameter of the pipe varies between 20 and 27mm, the "nominal" flow (Débit nominal) is 1.5 cubic meter per hour (m3/h) the maximum flow (Débit max) that can be measured is 3 m3/h; depending on the "class" of the water meter, it will start mesuring if the water flow is at least 60 / 30 /15 liter per hour (class A / B / C)

le calibre = the flow that the water counter is capable of measuring
