Io credo che tattoo in questo caso significhi impronta o segno, il seguito dice che se avesse battuto più forte sul pavimento avrebbe potuto scavare un tunnel.

: ho appena trovato questa spiegazione su un altro forum: tattoo here is a form of military music, normally from drums. EDIT: Insomma, secondo me "Impronta/segno" non c'entra perché si tratta di battere come su un tamburo come durante il "military tattoo".

Perché non sottolineare il fatto che Holly batteva il piede con un ritmo marcato e regolare, come una marcia militare che regola il passo in modo uniforme e cadenzato.Mi sembra che poi si possa legare bene anche al senso della frase successiva.
