No tengo mucha idea, pero me imagino que es un verbo que se refiere al movimiento "oscilante" propio de una leva ("cam"). Al moverse, la leva empuja el seguidor ("lever"). Las pocas apariciones que hay en Google lo vinculan siempre con up, down, against, out... (https://forum.wordreference.com/threads/cam-out-camme-out.91...
También lo he visto como dotar de leva a un mecanismo (ref. 1), y asociado como sinónimo a "crooked" (ref. 2), por si te sirvieran como pistas.
